An Appetite For Beauty 
You sound a lot like I did 25 years ago. I graduated college with the same confusion at how my friends could so willingly volunteer for a life that I saw as a big dark tunnel of commutes and Christmases and summer vacations with a teeny tiny light at the end when you get to die. No thanks.
I would not want to be so arrogant as to offer any advice, but some questions I could have asked myself a little more effectively…Why do you want to travel (live abroad)? What are you going to do once you’ve traveled (enough) and are inspired (enough)? Once your sword is sharp and shiny, what are you going to swing it at? In short, (do you know the poem, The Summer Day, by Mary Oliver?) – What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? Good luck, my man.

Thanks for commenting! These are definitely great questions to consider, and I think about some of them quite often. A lot of my answers to them are still ambiguous, but I will do my best to gain some clarity on them.
